Introduction of Glycan-related Products
Comprehensive and large-scale study of N/O-glycans in human milk
Human milk is abundant in carbohydrates and includes human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) and N/O-glycans conjugated to proteins. HMO compositions and concentrations vary in individuals according to the maternal secretor status based on the fucosyltransferase 2 (FUT2) genotype; however, the profile of N/O-glycans remains uninvestigated because of the analytical complexity.
This month, we would like to introduce a paper published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences: Label-Free Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Quantitation of Relative N- and O-Glycan Concentrations in Human Milk in Japan.
Using label-free LC-MS analysis, the group investigated the composition of N- and O-glycans in 200 Japanese breast milk samples and also quantified the concentrations of 11 HMOs using the HPAE-PAD method. The results showed that FUT2 genotype affected the composition and concentration of HMOs and O-glycans in breast milk, but not N-glycans.
This is the first comprehensive study to investigate the composition of HMOs and N/O-glycans in human breast milk using a large number of samples. Please click “Read More” for more information.

Automated system for glycan analysis of antibody drugs
In collaboration with Shimadzu Corporation, we offer an automated sample preparation system (device + dedicated kit) for glycan analysis of antibody drugs. By fully automating sample preparation, which was previously done manually, this system contributes to more efficient research and development of antibody drugs at pharmaceutical companies and CDMOs.
This is Iwasaki from S-Bio Business Division. Now it is winter time! When I was younger, I loved to play under the glaring sun of midsummer, but these days I would rather like to stroll around town feeling the crisp, cold, clear winter air.
